Does anybody else feel like they need this?⁠

Right now, things are hard. And not because anything is 'wrong' but I'm out doing my normal stuff; it's been a long time since I had some stable weeks & months. I'm trying to enjoy them because I know they might not last but I'm tired. A good tired, but tired, nonetheless. ⁠

I've been humbled this week as I know several friends going through tough medical challenges.⁠
⁠
𝚁𝚎𝚙𝚎𝚊𝚝 𝚊𝚏𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚖𝚎: 𝙸 𝚌𝚊𝚗 𝚍𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜⁠
⁠
⁠
I'm thinking back to my tough medical challenges; ⁠
⚪ those first few days after stoma surgery⁠
⚪ the painful attempts at cannulas⁠
⚪ needing TPN⁠
⚪ getting used to living with a bag on my belly
⚪ wound problems... all of it. ⁠
⁠
And beyond surgery, it doesn't stop. It doesn't end, it just fades away; you get better at not letting it be so forefront of your mind.⁠
⁠
But the magical thing about it continuing is that I know I can do it, I can get through it. ⁠
⁠
And getting through it means I can share my wisdom with others. And if that's the final aspect of feeling comfortable with my own medical conditions and how I now live my life, I wholeheartedly accept that. 🏅⁠

Today will be the first time I am visiting the hos

Today will be the first time I am visiting the hospital after the restrictions have completely lifted for masks in healthcare settings in the UK.⁠
⁠
I'm in two minds today about wearing one - it's going to be 32C by the time I get there this afternoon - but I also want to protect myself and those around me. ⁠
⁠
I'm attending a surgical appointment and will be in close contact with my surgeon. I might not be traditionally 'unwell' at the moment but I'm there for a very real and problematic reason. ⁠
⁠
It's going to be super weird, seeing faces again, after so long. I always carry one, so I can put it on if I feel vulnerable in different situations. ⁠
⁠
So this is just a reminder, no matter what others might think or say; ⁠
⁠

ɪ ᴄᴀɴ'ᴛ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɪꜰ ɪᴛ'ꜱ ᴋɪʟʟɪɴɢ ᴍᴇ ᴏʀ ᴍᴀᴋɪɴɢ ᴍᴇ ꜱᴛʀᴏɴɢᴇʀ⁠

I'll be honest, I sometimes can't quite tell the difference.⁠
⁠
I'd like to think that almost everything ive experienced with my chronic illnesses has made me stronger but in some situations, they have killed me. ⁠
⁠
Colon? ❌⁠
Rectum? ❌⁠
Abdominal wall? ❌⁠
Ovarian cysts? ❌⁠
⁠
I say this with a lot of dark humour but chronic illness is no joke, really. ⁠
Sometimes the things we have to go through - or in some cases, choose to go through - do harm us. They do physical and mental damage. And neither of those can be overlooked. ⁠
⁠
And they should not be dismissed, no matter how long ago it was, how healed you might be from them; it's never 100% gone, a line drawn under it, perfect life goes on. Health, especially chronically ill health, does not go like that.⁠
⁠
So if you can't tell if it's killing you or making you stronger, you're not alone. ⁠

I remember sitting in my hospital bed, the beginni

I remember sitting in my hospital bed, the beginning of a flare brewing, no one taking it seriously, deciding very late in the day to order tests and then discharging me without a plan. ⁠
⁠
Beyond feeling utterly pissed off, I felt so weak. ⁠
⁠
I was in a new city, attending a new hospital without my current team for backup, unsure of how aggressive to be, of how to properly advocate for myself. It was all so new but my health issues were not new; I'd been here not twelve months previous and that ended up with surgery. I did not want that again.⁠
⁠
Feeling that 'helpless' is what gives me all the strength I need to push, to ask questions, to chase, to annoy, to research, to speak up now. ⁠
⁠
So while I didn't feel strong then, I do now. And it will always be my driving force forward. Forget the whole '𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦, 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩' it can be hard to do that. Just remember, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻.⁠

These photos span over a decade of living with unconfirmed and diagnosed Crohn's disease. ⁠
⁠
Twenty-two-year-old me (far left) wouldn't have been able to fathom the trials and tribulations I've experienced with my health in the last twelve years. ⁠
But also, twenty-eight-year-old me (third and fourth from left) wouldn't have known I'd face many more surgeries than the ones that began a completely new chapter for me: ostomate. ⁠
⁠
This is the funny thing, it isn't until we look back - like I do on almost every awareness day - we realise how far we have come. Yes, it's been tough. And yes, it has been hard. But gosh, I am strong. ⁠
⁠
I think we overlook just how strong we continue to be with IBD, each and every day. And it's really easy to forget that too when life is moving a mile a minute. ⁠
⁠
So if you do anything today, take a moment and pat yourself on the back, IBD friends. You are wonderful. ⁠

Feeling pretty 😮‍💨🥴 but glad it’s done ✅ just another 91 days until my next one! 🫥

It has been a long, frustrating and stressful week so I am SUPER glad it’s time for a relaxing weekend of focusing on me me me without the annoying ping of Skype or Teams 🤘🏻
