Ostomy surgery felt like the worst possible outcome when medications began failing.
And after coming away from a resection without one, I felt so much relief.
But it was in the very darkest moments of the Summer of 2016, I opted for a stoma over trialling more medication to 'fix' a deep and nasty flare.

Ostomy surgery was probably one of the most challenging things I've ever done. I've lived abroad and attended university hundreds of miles away from home but having my colon out and readjusting to a new life was really hard.

Online and offline, who I am here today began on that hospital admission. It has given me many opportunities, adventures, experiences and reflections, it's hard to stay too mad at my body when it decides to play up or act out.

If there is anything I'd tell my younger self, it would be don't wait for perfection.

Ι΄α΄α΄›ΚœΙͺΙ΄Ι’ in life is perfect, and it is never ᴇᴠᴇʀ perfect on the first try. Heck, even with tons of experience, perfection is hard to achieve and dangerous to pursue.

So do what makes you happy, and don't postpone joy and your passions in the search for it being perfect. It won't be. But it will feel so much better without that nagging voice in your head telling you 'α΄›ΚœΙͺꜱ Ιͺꜱɴ'α΄› Κ€ΙͺΙ’Κœα΄›' or 'Ιͺ'ᴍ κœ±α΄›Ιͺʟʟ ɴᴏᴛ α΄›Κœα΄‡ Κ™α΄‡κœ±α΄›'.

Be fallible and real.

If you saw my stories on Thursday / Friday, I've been dealing with another butt abscess situation.

I was able to get into see my wonderful surgeon who made sure it does not require an urgent or emergent I&D - Incision and Drainage 🀒 - and at the moment it isn't. Phew! I have, unfortunately, got to wait for it to 'pop'. I'm taking some antibiotics to help lower the risk of a possible infection, but damn, it's tough.

I've had about four of these types of abscesses the last few years and it's a 'nice' addition to the ol' Crohns disease in my gut. And by now, I sort of know the drill. I can do all the things in the world to help 'prevent' them but it seems I'm just sort of prone to them.

Getting mentally prepared for needing a little surgery is still the biggest 'fake' upheaval when it comes to managing my health, and I know it would be much harder if I didn't have such a great support system and flexibly working environment.

Today, it did pop, however.
On new PJs.
At 6.30 am.
Am I relieved? Sort of πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ It's still hella painful but better than it was. But I also know it could be just the beginning...🀞🏻

When it comes to how you manage your IBD or stoma, When it comes to how you manage your IBD or stoma, it can be great to get advice and information so you can be armed with knowledge but π‘¦π‘œπ‘’ ultimately decide what to do.

Someone will always have a negative or opposite opinion to you, on pretty much everything when it comes to health, especially chronic illness. Because it’s either β€˜not real’, β€˜it’s that bad’ or you’re β€˜just not trying hard enough’

And out of all the things, you’ll probably remember the negative one over the many more positive ones.

π‘Œπ‘œπ‘’π‘Ÿ 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑖𝑠𝑛'𝑑 π‘¦π‘œπ‘’π‘Ÿπ‘  𝑖𝑓 π‘¦π‘œπ‘’ π‘Žπ‘™π‘€π‘Žπ‘¦π‘  π‘π‘Žπ‘Ÿπ‘’ π‘€π˜©π‘Žπ‘‘ π‘œπ‘‘π˜©π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘  π‘‘π˜©π‘–π‘›π‘˜

Caring about what others think about you isn’t a bad thing but letting them take over who you are and what you choose to do, is.

π‘Œπ‘œπ‘’ decide your life. π‘Œπ‘œπ‘’ choose what to do and how to do it. Even in health care, π‘¦π‘œπ‘’ have a choice, your opinion π‘šπ‘Žπ‘‘π‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘ .

Hi, just dropping in to remind you that having IBD is not a weakness. It’s a superpower. It’s a strength that you didn’t ask for, not sure why you have it but you’ll be damned if it’s going to stop you.

You are a warrior. Even when you don’t feel like one.
Don’t ever underestimate yourself and your own strength.
