Welcome to Day 1 of the November HAWMC! First, let’s get to know each other! What drives you to write about your health? What do you want other Health Activists to know about your condition and your activism? Reflect on this for 15-20 minutes without stopping…GO!
My name is Louise, I’m 28 and I’ve lived with Crohn’s Disease since 2011.
Crohn’s Disease is one of two condition under the umbrella term “Inflammatory Bowel Disease” (IBD).
I write about living with Crohn’s Disease because it is more than just a bowel condition. It is most certainly not to be confused with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It does not have a cure, only treatments which include major abdominal surgery.
I also write because I now have an ileostomy. My ostomy is one of two types formed when IBD becomes severe. This has made my life easier and harder, all of which I’m finding out slowly. I’m here to help educate and raise awareness of stomas and ostomies.
Writing and being active in the IBD support community hasn’t always been easy for me. I find my writing to be reflective of my own challenges; most of which I hope are common between fellow IBDers. But I strive to be a voice in the darkness when you’re looking for “oh, yes that’s happened to me too! I’m not so alone after all.”
